I really wish I had a better plan and had more time to implement my project fully. This school year, I was on a time crunch to complete all of my mandated teaching prior to my maternity leave in February, along with other projects that I’ve signed up for. I definitely want to do this again next school year, giving myself an entire year and starting with a strong plan.
In the beginning of the year, I will start with World of Wonder and Tech Talks, just like we did in our MSUrbanSTEM program. I am going to have my students sign up in the beginning of the year and have them present throughout the year. I will choose Fridays as my presentation date. I will also group my students and change these groups quarterly.
I will implement QuickFire challenges to my students. I haven’t’ decided if I want to change the name yet, but I like “QuickFire”, but I do want something more original to my classroom. The first challenge is going to be the same as my experience from MSUrbanSTEM program. Go out and create a math problem. I will be using Twitter and Google Classroom for students to post and share. I am also going to open an Instagram where I will post one photo each day highlighting our class. The next QuickFire challenge is going to be how my students see themselves as a mathematician. I am going to have a creative station.
I regret that my ImagineIt and Deep Play was limited to “coding”. It was actually “computer science” but I was too focused on my Computer Science for All in Algebra program that it took up the entire time and my focus. Next school year, without having a pressure to complete the grant, I will be able to broaden my aspect. Whereas this year, coding was the main focus, in the next school year, it will only be a small branch of the tree that will focus on “math is everywhere”. Other branches include World of Wonder, Tech Talk, and QuickFire challenges as mentioned above. I will be using various technology for students to present. I will be revisiting our MSUrbanSTEM/teamtwo site quite often to refer back to the learning that I have done. I like to look at this school year as just a test phase and next year as a learning phase.
