I want to use the skills that I have learned from MSUrbanSTEM program to other teachers. I’ve had some practice with my learning for part of the school year, but was not able to fully incorporate it to my satisfaction. I am going to continue to implement, learn from my mistakes, and grow from my experience. I will be able to share confidently after I have fully implemented to my liking.
My major focus was on computer science and math. I used the program Bootstrap to introduce to my students. I want to broaden to share with my students that math is everywhere. I have not had too many chances to engage students in QuickFire challenges. QuickFire challenges helps students to be creative, think on feet, work collaboratively, and be able to meet high demand in a short time frame, similarly to as engineers would on a given project. I want to create a similar environment in my classroom where I would prepare my students for this type of setting.
My experiences have been within middle school math in the Chicago Public Schools. I worked on the south side of Chicago with 99% of African-American students, and on the north side of school where there are 27 languages spoken at one school. I have worked with many diverse colleagues. In pursuing my masters degree in educational leadership, I have met many great Chicago teachers who want to take their teaching to the next level. In my English as Second Language courses, I have met many passionate teachers who want to educate immigrants and helping them maintain their language while learning English. In my math teacher leader institute, I met many math teachers who work in a similar setting with curriculum of teaching. I have a diverse network of both teachers and in my personal life.
My teaching career has been very focused on data driven and being able to raise the scores. Perhaps this was because my teaching career started at a school which was on probation that was threatened to close. I needed to raise student high stakes test and that was all it mattered. Now that I look back, I’m not sure if my students have gained long term knowledge. I taught short term “skills” to pass the questions on the test, or perhaps higher chances of getting the correct answer. I want to abandon this thought. I don’t want any teachers teaching for short term, teach on such high pressure, but for them to enjoy teaching because students are gaining knowledge that would help them in the future.
