“Mathematics is the most beautiful and most powerful creation of the human spirit.” -Stefan Banach-
Many of my 7th graders isolate “math” as a subject that they learn only in math class with the math teacher. However, math is a tool that we use in our lives. It’s not an isolated subject that students learn only in math class with the math teacher, but rather it is integrated in all subjects, and in our lives. Math is in science, social studies, reading, writing, and in our everyday lives. As children in a traditional setting go to school, they learn different subject in a specific time, so therefore, our students tend to turn off their brain of one subject to turn on for the another one.
It is with this idea that I want to integrate STEM in my classroom. My 7th grade students will learn science, technology, engineering, and math through Computer Science for All (CS4All) program of Chicago Public Schools. For example, my students may think they are solving math problems - but in actuality, they will be taking our everyday life situation or real-world math problem, and using the technology skills of graphing linear equations.
